Sick Visits Q & A

What is a sick visit?

A sick visit is an essential part of quality pediatric care when the team at HG Pediatrics sees your child because they aren’t feeling well, are generally tired, or have symptoms of an illness.

The most common reasons for childhood sick visits include:

  • Sore throat
  • Earache
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Cough
  • Cold
  • Bronchitis
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Asthma attack (mild or moderate)
  • Allergic reaction
  • Nausea or vomiting

At HG Pediatrics, you can schedule your child’s sick visit the same day they show symptoms. The practice offers short wait times in the waiting room so that they can begin treatment as quickly as possible.

When should I bring my child for a sick visit?

It is not always easy to know when symptoms need treatment or when it is best to stay home and rest. The team at HG Pediatrics recommends a sick visit for problems, including:

  • Sore throat with a fever or history of strep
  • Severe abdominal pain or pain lasting more than five days
  • Frequent or painful urination
  • Earache with fever or difficulty sleeping
  • Persistent cough or sinus drainage
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting lasting more than 24 hours
  • Fevers lasting more than five days or reaching higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Any fever in children less than two months old

If your child has a headache related to a fall or head trauma or accompanied by neck pain or fever, it is essential they see their pediatric team as soon as possible. If your adolescent doesn’t seem to be recovering well after they have been ill, a sick visit may be necessary.

What happens during sick visits?

During a sick visit, the team at HG Pediatrics assesses your child’s health by collecting height and weight, temperature, and other vital signs. They focus their assessment and diagnostic testing on your child’s symptoms.

Depending on their symptoms, they may order:

  • Strep or flu testing
  • Blood or urine studies
  • Chest X-ray
  • Antibiotic treatment
  • Over-the-counter or prescription medications

Other recommendations may include rest, oral hydration, nutritious foods, or a bland diet. If appropriate, the team can write a work or school excuse for you or your child. If needed, they may order a follow-up appointment within a few days or weeks.

If your child has symptoms of an illness, call, walk-in, or schedule an appointment online for a sick visit with the team at HG Pediatrics today.
