Vaccines Q & A

What are vaccines?

Vaccines are injectable treatments that protect your child from serious diseases. Giving vaccinations to children at a young age allows their immune system to develop the necessary protection against these infectious diseases before they make contact with your child.

Vaccinations also protect the community at large, preventing others from contracting measles, chicken pox, and polio.

What vaccines does my child need?

Dr. Garza determines which vaccines your child needs based on their age and the Center for Disease Control’s recommended immunization schedule. Infants and children up to six years old receive the following immunizations:

  • Varicella: protects against chickenpox
  • DTaP: protects against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus
  • Hib: protects against meningitis
  • MMR: protects against mumps, measles, and rubella
  • IPV: protects against polio
  • PCV: protects against pneumococcus
  • RV: protects against rotavirus

Hepatitis A and B vaccinations, as well as the flu shot, for children under six are also available at HG Pediatrics.

For kids ages seven to 18, vaccinations against meningitis, whooping cough, and flu are also available. In addition, the team can administer the vaccine that fights off the cancer-causing human papillomavirus.

Is it safe for my child to get several vaccines at the same time?

Getting multiple vaccines on the same day is definitely safe for your child. Their immune system is capable of fighting off thousands of germs every day. The number of germs present in vaccines is much less than what their body is able to fight naturally.

The team provides you with a dosing schedule for immunizations your child needs through each age and stage of development. Some vaccines require more than one dose to be effective. It is essential to ensure your child receives all recommended vaccinations on schedule for maximum protection.

What are travel vaccines?

The team administers required travel vaccines if you plan to take your child out of the United States. These vaccines prevent diseases like typhoid, yellow fever, and other health risks from the countries you plan to explore.

At least one month before you travel, HG Pediatrics can administer the recommended vaccines. This allows her to monitor your child for possible side effects without interrupting your travel plans and gives your child's immune system time to build up the necessary protection.
